As I strive for success, I’ve learned the importance of being my own cheerleader—celebrating small victories, rewarding myself, and taking breaks when needed. 

However, I’ve also discovered another aspect of personal growth that’s equally crucial: harnessing the power of pressure

The question is, 

Should we intentionally put pressure on ourselves to achieve our goals? 

Some argue that deadlines can lead to disappointment, anxiety, and stress. 

But, when utilised correctly, pressure can be a powerful catalyst for growth and success. 

In this article, I’ll share my insights on striking the right balance and using pressure to our advantage.

The Truth About Deadlines and Pressure

Deadlines are the lifelines that steer us towards our goals, but it’s the pressure we embrace that truly sets us free to achieve our highest potential.

Setting deadlines and putting pressure on ourselves can be a double-edged sword. 

On one hand, deadlines provide focus, motivation, and a sense of urgency. 

On the other hand, unrealistic deadlines can lead to stress, burnout, and ultimately failure. 

The key lies in finding the sweet spot between challenging ourselves and setting attainable goals.

When I set unrealistic deadlines, I set myself up for failure. 

Anxiety builds as I realise that I’m unlikely to meet my goals, leading to a sense of defeat even before the deadline arrives.

Let me share an example: I wanted to start a blog as a side hustle to generate income. 

Depending on my other commitments, the deadline for achieving this goal varied. 

If I set a deadline of one year, I found it uninspiring and easy to procrastinate. 

Conversely, setting a one-month deadline felt like setting myself up for failure due to the steep learning curve involved. 

I discovered that a four-month deadline struck a balance between challenging and attainable, providing the necessary pressure to drive me forward.

Maximising Productivity through Pressure

The right amount of pressure can lead to a heightened sense of focus and productivity.

When faced with a challenging deadline, I’m more likely to make the most of my limited time and prioritise tasks effectively. 

As I complete each task, I move closer to my goal, fueled by the pressure I’ve intentionally placed on myself.

If you’ve achieved roughly 70% of what you set out to do, it’s time to move on to the next task or goal.

It’s essential to recognise when you’re being too hard on yourself and take steps to ease the pressure, such as setting realistic goals, seeking support, and prioritising self-care.

Identifying and Addressing Anxiety from Self-Pressure

Being hard on yourself can sometimes stem from anxiety. 

Recognise the signs that you’re experiencing anxiety due to self-pressure, such as excessive worry, feelings of inadequacy, or constant self-criticism. 

To address this anxiety, practice relaxation techniques, set achievable goals, and seek professional help if needed.

The Role of Perfectionism in Mental Health and Personality Disorders

Perfectionism can be a symptom of various mental health issues, including anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). 

It’s crucial to recognise when perfectionism is  negatively impacting your mental health and seek appropriate support and treatment.

Pressure can also manifest within relationships, leading to unrealistic expectations and disappointment. 

It’s essential to communicate openly with your partner, set healthy boundaries, and practice self-compassion to maintain a balanced and supportive relationship.
