We do it because we understand the consequences of neglecting it – poor oral health, tooth decay, and bad breath.

That would be a game-changer, wouldn’t it?

So, I decided to give it a shot.

Discovering Your ‘Why’: The First Step Towards Personal Development Habits

The first step was to ask myself, “Why did I start on this path of personal growth?”

Just as we don’t question brushing our teeth because we know the benefits and the consequences of not doing it, the same principle applies to personal development.

Without a compelling reason or a strong ‘why’ to pursue our goals, we’ll never find the motivation to start or the strength to persist.

Can you recall the reason you first embarked on your path of personal growth?

That’s your key.

I found myself needing to constantly remind myself of my ‘why’ – the reason I embarked on this path in the first place.

Reinforce your reasons before you go to sleep and again when you wake up.

As I wake up, still in a state of drowsiness, I give myself a pep talk.

Rise and shine! It’s another day, another opportunity to make a difference. So, get up, put the kettle on, and seize the day!

And that’s exactly what I do.

I started treating my personal growth as a professional commitment.

Imagine being recruited by a leading company.

Your assignment?

To work on your goals and get compensated for it.

A supervisor is keeping a close eye on you. There’s a deadline to meet. Wouldn’t you work until you’ve achieved it?

Adopting this professional mindset helped me establish my daily routines.

My day typically starts between 8:30 and 9:30. I plunge in, fully focused, for at least 2 hours. I have an invisible sign that reads:

Please do not disturb me. I’m at work.

You might consider having one of those actual signs, too, especially if you’re working from home.

Consistency is Key

Most successful individuals share one common characteristic: consistency.

I came across a question on Quora recently: “How did YOU become a multi-millionaire?

Sam Dogen, the owner of Financial Samurai, listed seven reasons, and the last one was “unwavering consistency.”

He stated:

… I launched the site in 2009 during the peak of the financial crisis and made a promise to myself to publish 3X a week for 10 years straight. I figured, if I could stay consistent all these years, the site would grow, allow me to quit my job, and earn me some online income and equity in the process. Almost 10 years later, it has done just that. A couple of my peers just sold their websites for $6M – $7M, but I plan to keep going because running Financial Samurai is fun!

Did you catch that?

He committed himself to publishing three times a week for a decade!

Impressive, isn’t it?

Don’t worry if you aren’t hitting your goals 2 or 3 times a week, though.

Achieving them once a week is far better than once a month.

We all have our own objectives.

What’s vital is that we chase them consistently.

It’s about making personal development as routine as brushing our teeth.

Clear’s book is filled with actionable insights and is a must-read for anyone committed to personal development.

Often, we find ourselves tangled in a web of our own thoughts, unsure of what we’re trying to express or how to structure our ideas.

Instead, I focused on expressing my thoughts as they came, without judgement or self-censorship.

Distractions are the archenemy when we’re trying to maintain momentum.

It’s crucial to identify our distractions and eliminate them.

At one point, I had about 20 tabs open in my browser.

Madness, right?

Nir Eyal, author of “Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life,” emphasises that a clear mind leads to clear achievements.

When our minds are cluttered, our progress reflects it.

The more tabs we have open on our computers, the messier our thoughts get, and the more we get sidetracked.

Eyal suggests that understanding and mastering our triggers, both internal and external, is critical to staying focused.

External triggers like cellphones and work colleagues can be controlled by turning off your phone, logging out of social media, or putting a sign on your computer monitor telling colleagues you’re busy.

Internal triggers, on the other hand, come from within and are often uncomfortable emotional states we seek to escape.

Reflecting on why we get distracted and learning healthier ways to respond is an integral part of developing sustained focus.

So, let’s declutter our minds and our workspaces, and keep our focus on the task at hand.

Maintain Hydration

My journey towards better health began with a simple yet significant change – increasing my water intake.

While I’ve never been a fan of soft drinks, I used to consume an excessive amount of coffee, up to 6 cups a day.

However, I realised the importance of water for my health and well-being and made a conscious effort to drink more of it.

Mix Up Your Beverage Choices

In addition to drinking water every day, I also keep a variety of teas on hand. This helps me avoid overdoing any one thing.

While I’ve replaced much of my coffee intake with water, too much water can also be harmful.

Both tea and coffee contribute to our daily recommended intake of 8 glasses of water.

So, I balance my hydration with plain water and a variety of teas, such as peppermint, ginger and lemon, green, chamomile, and dandelion tea.

Speaking of dandelion tea, it’s a fantastic alternative to caffeine-rich coffee and comes packed with numerous health benefits.

According to Healthline, dandelion tea can help detoxify the liver, relieve symptoms of liver disease, and even has potential anti-cancer effects.

It’s also a great aid in preventing urinary tract infections when paired with another herb, uva ursi.

So, if you’re looking for a healthy, caffeine-free alternative, dandelion tea might be worth a try.

This is especially true for those of us who spend long hours sitting, as this can result in tight hamstrings and other issues.

So, during your dedicated time for personal development, remember to take brief breaks.

These breaks not only give your brain a chance to recharge but also provide an opportunity to do some simple exercises.

This could be anything from squats, planks, sit-ups, and push-ups to a few minutes on a mini-trampoline.

These activities help ease the stiffness from sitting too long and promote better blood circulation.

Remember, maintaining a balance between focused work and rest is crucial for sustainable personal development habits.

Take a Stroll Outside

Stepping outside for a walk is not just a simple break from your routine, it’s a powerful tool for rejuvenation.

A brisk walk can do wonders for your physical and mental health.

According to a Harvard Health article, walking can counteract the effects of weight-promoting genes, curb cravings for sugary snacks, reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, ease joint pain, and even boost immune function.

So, when you feel your energy levels dipping, don’t hesitate to lace up your shoes and head out for a refreshing walk.

It’s a simple, free, and effective way to recharge and refocus on your personal development journey.

Choose Smaller, Frequent Meals Over One Large One

In the past, a substantial meal used to be a significant distraction for me. The preparation didn’t take long, but the aftermath was a different story.

I often cooked a large meal for lunch, intending to save some for dinner. But I’d end up consuming it all at once, a clear sign of stress.

Now, I’ve shifted to preparing smaller portions.

I no longer fool myself into thinking I’d save the rest for dinner. It’s better to be realistic with my expectations than to succumb to overeating.

A large meal leaves me feeling sluggish and uncomfortable. On the other hand, smaller meals keep me energized and focused.

They also allow me to take a mini-break from my tasks, which aids in maintaining momentum.

From my personal experience, having 4-5 small meals a day has helped me manage my energy levels better and avoid the sluggishness that often comes after a large meal.
