Pause for a moment and ponder over the little things in life that bring you joy every day.
What would be on your list? It’s likely more extensive than you might think.
I hit the metaphorical pause button to delve deeper into the simple pleasures that brighten my daily life, making it easier to embrace the joy in everyday life.
When you create your own list, you’ll be reminded that happiness doesn’t rely on grand or flashy experiences.
It’s often the small, everyday moments that truly matter.
So, let’s explore some simple things that remind us that finding joy in everyday life is right where we are, just waiting to be discovered.
Below, I’m listing examples of my personal sources of everyday joy.
I encourage you to consider your own experiences and reflect on the small moments that make you happy.
Identifying Examples of Joy in Your Daily Routine
Before diving into specific examples, take a moment to reflect on your daily routine.
What are the little moments or activities that bring you happiness?
It could be the way the morning sunlight streams through your window or the quiet moments you spend sipping your tea.
By identifying these moments, you’re one step closer to finding joy in everyday life.
1. Writing: Rekindling a Childhood Passion
While my blog inspired me to write regularly, the real spark for writing was ignited during an unexpected conversation with my optician.
He’s a partner in the business, having chosen the profession to support himself and, later, his family financially.
However, his genuine passion lies in painting.
On weekends, he devotes his time to painting in his studio—a converted garden shed—and successfully sells his artwork through word of mouth.
Hearing his inspirational story prompted me to reminisce about my own long-forgotten childhood passion for writing.
As our conversation came to an end, he gently suggested, “You should probably start writing again.”
That simple nudge was all it took, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Ever since that delightful exchange, writing has become my number one source of everyday happiness.
2. Morning Coffee: A Daily Ritual
It’s nearly impossible for me to imagine starting a day without a cup of coffee.
The enticing aroma and rich taste of coffee signal the beginning of a new day as I hold the warm cup in my hand, pondering what the rest of the day will bring.
3. Books: Kindle Unlimited – A Treasure Trove
Here’s a quirky confession: I find myself grateful for the existence of certain intangible things, with Kindle Unlimited topping the list.
It’s a game-changer for any avid reader like myself.
Every time I finish an outstanding book, I can’t help but feel thankful.
With millions of books and thousands of audiobooks just a few clicks away, it’s a treasure trove for those who read more than two books a month.
If you’re considering giving it a try, Amazon offers a 30-day free trial, which you can cancel anytime and still enjoy the service for the entire month.
I also appreciate the authors who make their books available on Kindle Unlimited, as they’re essentially providing a valuable public service.
My fervent love for Kindle Unlimited even inspired me to write about the advantages of eBooks and how they can encourage you to read more.
4. Kindness from Strangers: A Simple Gesture
Picture yourself strolling through a bustling city street.
A random passerby stops, smiles, and greets you warmly. Or perhaps you’re the one offering a friendly hello to a stranger.
In the busy urban environment, this might earn you some odd looks or even a remark like, “What a weirdo!”
But when I moved to a small town in southeastern England from London, I found these simple acts of kindness commonplace.
I remember walking along the beach when an elderly couple gently wished me a good morning.
I hesitated, caught off guard—such greetings weren’t the norm in London.
Nowadays, I often initiate these warm exchanges with strangers myself. These small moments of kindness from strangers never fail to brighten my day.
Discovering Joy in Life’s Little Moments
As you go through your day, keep your eyes open for the small moments that bring you joy.
It could be a genuine smile from a stranger, a beautiful flower in a neighbour’s garden, or a warm hug from a loved one.
These little moments often hold the key to finding joy in everyday life.
Learn to cherish them and seek them out whenever you need a boost of happiness.
5. Short Bursts of Exercise: A Quick Mood Booster
I love my affordable, lively, and entertaining mini-trampoline.
As I write this, I just took a break to run in place while counting to 100, perform 50 jumping jacks, and complete 25 squats—all on my mini-trampoline.
I do this several times a day, and it’s an instant mood booster.
A reassuring BBC news piece compared Tai chi and Zumba, with Dr. Jet Veldhuijzen van Zanten, a senior lecturer in biological psychology, stating that any amount and any kind of exercise are beneficial for your health and wellbeing.
So, take the pressure off yourself. There’s no need for vigorous exercise to stay fit.
Forget about feeling guilty for not following others’ suggestions. Instead, choose the exercise you genuinely enjoy and be content with whatever amount you can regularly do.
6. Solitude: Finding Peace in Being Alone
Might it seem strange that solitude can be a source of happiness?
If we consider happiness to be a peaceful state of mind, then solitude contributes significantly to it.
A quote about solitude from Justin Timberlake resonates with me:
The best part about being alone is that you really don’t have to answer to anybody. You do what you want.
While some people might associate solitude with loneliness, I see it as a form of freedom and choice.
7. Taking a Nap: Recharging Your Batteries
If you’re not used to napping, it may take some time to adapt.
When I feel tired or need a quick recharge, I sit in my chair, close my eyes, and shut out the world around me. The effect is incredible.
Winston Churchill, a well-known nap enthusiast, once said:
Nature has not intended mankind to work from eight in the morning until midnight without that refreshment of blessed oblivion which, even if it only lasts twenty minutes, is sufficient to renew all the vital forces.
A NASA study on pilots further supports the benefits of napping, concluding that a 26-minute nap improves performance by 34% and alertness by 54%.
Overcoming Happiness Obstacles and Embracing Joy
Life can sometimes present obstacles that make it difficult to experience joy.
It’s essential to recognise and address these challenges to fully embrace happiness in everyday life.
This may involve finding new ways to cope with stress, surrounding yourself with positive people, or seeking professional help when needed.
By overcoming these obstacles, you’ll be better equipped to find joy in even the smallest moments.
8. Embracing the Great Outdoors: Benches, Wildflowers, Sunshine, and Ocean Waves
Whether it’s sunny or rainy, there’s just something about being outdoors, right?
When I step outside and take a walk on the beach or sit on one of those dedicated benches that read, “Lindsey loved this view,” I can’t help but let my imagination wander.
For a moment, I let myself become Lindsey, taking in the sight of the blue sea, puppies frolicking on the beach, and feeling the gentle breeze and warm sun on my face.
Just like Lindsey must have done, however long ago…
There’s something truly therapeutic about the sound of ocean waves.
9. Binge-Watching TV Shows as a Reward
After a hard day’s work, binge-watching TV shows became my reward when I signed up for the Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial.
I signed up, received some packages the very next day, and then cancelled the subscription.
But the free access lasted for a month, allowing me to indulge in a few shows as a treat after working hard!
Although short-lived, it rejuvenated my weary mind and body, bringing a dose of happiness into my life.
10. Belting Out a Tune
I’ve always loved singing. I was part of the school choir and adored music class.
Karaoke with colleagues, friends, and family has always been a blast. Just thinking about it puts a smile on my face.
Singing is also a fantastic mood booster. If you’re feeling down, I highly recommend giving it a try!
The Key Factors to Living a Joyful Life
To live a joyful life, focus on the key factors that contribute to happiness.
Cultivate gratitude for the simple pleasures in life, practise mindfulness to stay present in the moment, and prioritise self-care to maintain your well-being.
By consistently nurturing these factors, you’ll be well on your way to finding joy in everyday life.
Nurturing the Fruit of Joy for a Fulfilling Life
Embrace the concept of joy as a fruit that needs to be nurtured and cultivated.
Just like a fruit tree, joy requires care and attention to grow and flourish.
By taking the time to nourish your joy, you’ll be investing in your long-term happiness and ultimately leading a more fulfilling life.
Final Thoughts on Everyday Joy
It’s easy to lose sight of everyday happiness when we’re caught up in our daily responsibilities and stress.
Creating a list of simple things that bring you joy serves as a reminder that you have more reasons to be happy than you might think.
So, embrace the everyday happiness that surrounds you; it’s everywhere, just waiting to be noticed.
